Default 2012 1.6 drivE overheating.

Hello, recently got overheat message with temp gauge rising above half way with steam exiting from a split in coolant tank. turned on the heater and opened windows and temp returned to normal half way position. I now think that the cooling fan is not working as I replaced the thermostat and temp sensor. The fan is not seized and spins freely but does not appear to operate at all if the AC is on, have read it should spin at low speed when this is on.
Am I correct in thinking that by unplugging the coolant temp sensor ( thermostat housing ) should force fan to spin up ? is there another temp sensor somewhere else ? ( rad maybe ) or am I looking at new fan/module ?
thanks in advance.

PS.
Also noted that subsequent overheating did not result in temp gauge change ( stayed steady at half way ) and no message either.

The fan should operate when the aircon is on. Id say it's dead. You will need to replace the split tank, also check the cap as it should vent long before the tank splits....

Default Fixed.

Was indeed an ineffective fan, replacing was a bit fiddly but all functions correctly now, bottle and cap replaced to.
