The shafts are working when the wipers are off. Yes i removed them to put a new wing panel on the drivers side, I had to pull up the piece of panelling between the bonnet and the windscreen to get at on of the bolts on the old wing panel.

I think i put them back on badly/ left on right etc and have now possibly stripped the splines on the wiper arms as i started the wipers and the motors were going by the arms weren’t. The splines on the motor assembly seem ok, its just the splines on the wiper arms them selves. Looks like i might need to get new ones from a breaker!

Thanks again
That “piece of panelling” is the scuttle panel. It has a fastening at each end and one in the centre, partly hidden by wiring I think and a bit difficult to access IIRC. That panel is a proper faff to remove and replace due to the rear edge of the bonnet. Last time I had mine off it refused to go back even though I was manoeuvring the bonnet back and forth. Stopped for a smoke and a coffee and it thenwent straight back on no bother.
I bet you won’t make that mistake again. It’s often the silly little things that seem straightforward when you are actually doing something more serious (ie: fitting the wing) that cause problems because of a moments inattention. We’ve all done it at one time or another. Suggest you lube the wiper spindles/shafts whilst arms are off.

Thanks for the info and encouragement. I managed to get to the nut I needed by just removing the bolt holding the end of the skuttle panel down, then taking the wipers off and flexing it up a little. I couldn’t find the middle bolt. Yeah I thought the wing would be easier and it was getting late and I was working outside with only natural light so when I realised I had to take the wipers off I was starting to panic!

Hi,

My expansion tank level goes from half way between min and max when cold to near max when hot. Key thing is that the level stays the same for whatever temperature the engine is at.

Cheers,
LeeP

William, if you're in North London and want a source of OEM info. and parts, contact Steve Nicholls on 020 8985 2255 at https://www.volvocars.com/uk/find-a-...lers/tottenham. The picture on that page shows Matt Worton, Sentinel Volvo manager and Bernie Worton's son. Bernie set up Braydon Motors (recently extinct) that serviced older Volvos for 30 years and knows more about 900 series Volvos than most; Steve in Parts upstairs knows more than Bernie.

Although under the same roof as Sentinel, the parts company that Steve manages supplies older Volvo owners and is called Trust Car Parts. Sentinel itself will service older Volvos at a reduced rate, and you won't find better help for your 940 in London.

That's very good to know. Over the years I used Braydon but for the past few years they seemed to have melted away into oblivion. Bob

I often buy parts from Skandix. https://www.skandix.de/en/ They often give a choice between a genuine Volvo part (expensive) or a compatible non-Volvo part (less expensive).

If I am not sure whether a part is correct I contact them with the car's VIN and they have always promptly either confirmed that the part is correct for my car or else corrected my error.
