1998 Volvo S70 TDI - 2 Owners from new, non runner
1998 Volvo S70 TDI – R424AUY
Hi All, I wasn’t expecting this day to come around as soon as this, but it is with regret that I am offering my 1998 S70 TDI as spares/repairs, selling as a non runner after the engine stopped. A bit of history for those individuals like myself, This S70 TDI was registered in Moscow in 1998 where it spent the first year of its life; it was then taken to Gibraltar where it spent the next 13 years until it was shipped back to Tayport (Just outside Dundee) in Scotland at the beginning of 2013. I bought it off it’s one and only owner in August last year when it had done 141,265 miles. The first job I had done was a full service, timing belts, tensioners, water pump and new rocker cover all for the pricey sum of £637.01. She ran without any issues (except it’s 5000 mile interval oil changes) until a small oil leak developed at the crank shaft, this required a new crank shaft oil seal and as a precaution the timing belt was changed again, with yet another oil change (all parts genuine Volvo), This was carried out on 27th May 2014 at 157,064 miles. It again ran perfectly up until Monday 7th 2014.... Once home from work I parked the car in the drive and the engine just cut out, no major noises, just stopped. The engine turns over and I have had my mechanic check the belts and they are all intact (so timing belt hasn’t snapped) So I thought I’d offer it up to see if anyone on here would like to take it away with a view to get it up and running again as I am in the process of moving house and do not have the time. The body of the car is in excellent condition no rust what so ever, not even under the car. The front bumper has a couple of scratches on it and has been sun damaged when it was abroad in Gibraltar; the rear spoiler is the same. The paint work is in very good condition as is the interior of the car with only some slight wear to the driver bolsters. I’m not really sure what to even ask for the car, I’ll be very honest and open with you all I paid £1595.00 and have spent probably spent that again on it with belts, oil, tyres etc. I also have a set of Perfo wheels that I may throw in if the price is right, as I’m selling it as a non runner I’m not expecting to see amazing returns but please don’t hit me too hard, the last thing I want to do is send her to the scrap yard...... Sensible offers will be considered...!! If anyone is interested please feel free to PM me with any questions or give me a call on 07834 789975, I will upload a whole load of pictures on Wednesday. Thanks Adam Stewart |

Hi all,
Here's a selection of photos taken this afternoon, Mechanic has confirmed that all belts, tensioners are in tact. Engine will turn over just wont start, no oil leaks etc. Will be on Ebay later this evening as i need to get this shifted one way or another, i hope the photo's show just how good condition the car's in. PS all engine covers are in the boot. |

Did it cut out and not restart or did you turn it off and it wouldn't restart.
These cars are well known for immobiliser issues so if its the latter theres a free fix regarding the immobiliser pickup ring. Mine did the same (turn not fire) and it was simply a case of unplugging it and plugging it back in and its been fine for 30000 miles now! However if its not that then check the fuel delivery clear tube and make sure fuel is getting there, if it isn't then the lift pumps swannied, if it is then its a high pressure fault, so its on the pump, there is a big electrical plug on it which can sometimes cause issue. Also the cost of a replacement pump fitted is about £300 which could be worth considering - there is a finite amount of things that CAN be wrong if the belts are intact....

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, it drove home from work without any issues then just cut out and hasn't started since.. The engine will turn over with all belts moving etc but my fear is there could be something else wrong. I don't have the time at the moment to spend fixing it so one of 3 things will happen.. 1) it sits on the drive and doesn't move 2) someone makes me an offer and it goes or 3) it gets taken away and broken.. At this moment I'd take any sensible offers, I know it would need trailered away so how does £350.00 sound to anyone willing to rescue it? I really don't want to scrap it as the body/underneath is in such good condition. Adam |

Have you had a diagnostic check done on it? I have VOL-FCR software and would be happy to come over (FOC) and plug it in to see if there are any faults showing, it would be a shame to lose the car for the sake of a £30 crank sensor or something.

Hi,
As I said my only concern was the mechanic that came to look said it could be something bigger that's gone wrong deeper down in the engine... So as much as I'd like to think it was a software issue all signs point to something else... 😞 |

Aye, for the sake of making the guy a cuppa and offering him a hobnob (chocolate of course) or 2, the OP will kick himself if the car goes for peanuts and it ends up being a cheap and easy fix.

Its nice to see a clean car for a change!! You'd be daft to not at least get it tested!!
