Forgive my ignorance but are the MAF sensor and Air Mass Meter one and the same? If not, should I replace both?

I've just tried running the engine with the connector to the AMM removed and, whilst the engine struggles to idle, it seems much smoother when revved - no hint of hesitation. When I plugged it back in the idling was better (still lumpy, of course) but the revving was hesitant again. Is this enough to suggest the MAF sensor/AMM is the culprit?

Just to add a little more weight to the AMM argument, it sounds exactly like the symptoms I had when my AMM failed in my 1991 240.
I know they're not cheap, but it'll fix it! David |

A BIG thank you to EVERYONE for your help on this. It was the Air Mass Meter. I got a secondhand one off Ebay, as suggested and bingo: problem solved! My Volvo is a pleasure to drive again. Thanks again, Barrie
