If you dont have axle stands than you can use blocks of hardwood to help support the car. It is also a good idea to push the removed wheel under the car so should all other supports fail it is limited in how far it can drop.

NEVER go under a car raised on teh factory jack

I find for most jobs I don't really need to raise the car much, as they have good ground clearance.

For the torque rods I put a trolley jack under the trailing arm and lift it half an inch and remove the wheel (axle stand under something substantial clear of where you are working),
The front bolt can be undone by half-lying under the cill. The rear I do under the wheel arch, reaching past the spring and exhaust pipe.
To get the nuts started I put a ring spanner in a suitable position and then lever it with a wrecking bar against the trailing arm or something sturdy.

For anything other than roadside punctures the factory jack is pretty useless. Lots of winding, and unstable because of the angle change as you lift.

Thank you for all your replies. I had a look at the weekend and although it looks do-able for me Ive decided to take it to a garage and have them do it. They charge £60 and hour which for the South East seems a good deal to me. Ive order new bushes from Brookhouse Volvo. Booked in for tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Hi all, took the 240 today to have the bushes done. They charged me £90 for the work which I thought was a good deal.
