Default Reggie Perrin - Good or Bad for Volvo

We have lots of sensible, and helpful, threads on here so I wanted to start a slightly frivolous one. If lots of people object then it can be removed but I though it would make a change.

In the new series of Reggie Perrin, with Martin Clunes as Reggie, he normally commutes by train. The train is always late so "to teach them a lesson" he decided to drive. What car does he have? A Volvo S40 (you were wondering where this was going weren't you?) in a very sexy Brilliant Blue Pearl. I can't work out the model but it did have a spoiler on the back. I don't think it was an R-Design but I may be proved wrong there.

In a fit of pique he decided to put his foot down and drive through fields, hedges etc. I thought it actually made the car look pretty damned good but I may be biased, driving an S40 myself.

So the question is - Does Reggie have an S40 to prove his life is dull or is it a coincidence?

Perhaps the producer/writer decided to get a car to suit Reggie, or was it a case of it was the only car available at the time?

I think these things are all thought out. In the case of this programme in particular as it shows the disintegration of his life. However I thought the car, in that colour looked really good. Maybe they thought a Volvo would be dull, whereas it certainly wasn't. Of course I could just be overly sensitive or paranoid about this.

2.0D R-Design. Nice... although not after it was driven through a field ;-)

I expect it's more to do with the social setting.

He drives a fairly nice car, he has a nice wife, a decent job, and he has a nice suburban home.

The whole show is about how an apparently successful man lives what is in reality a dull life, despite how it might appear to others. His material goods don't buy him anything, and he's growing apart from his wife. He's having a mid-life crisis.

At least, that's how it appears to me.

I loved the original series of Reggie Perrin and he drove a Ford Craptina in that series!!

The show (to me) only echoes what most of us tend to go through one way or another and is a nice touch on reality I think.

Coming back to the Volvo maybe the writers thought that Reggie would go for something 'safe'. I would say that the Volvo is seen as something of quality and class compared to 'normal' cars they normaly 'cast' the cars to fit the actors way of life so I don't think they just picked the nearest available car for him.

I'm still battling a bit with Volvo's old image of a Battleship/barge for old people but am clinging onto the slightly cool nature of the S40 and hoping the C30 will attract younger people (which it is) and drag the S40 along with it.

i think this has a lot to do with stereo types. like regie and his job the volvo is seen to be boring and rather dull where as in actuall fact they are the opposite.

coincidentally i was looking at getting a s40 in that colour second hand but cant find one anywhere.

I am not sure whether I like the fact that our cars are seen as boring or not... I like the fact that everybody underestimates them, despite the grunt that the decent engines have, but I hate the fact that my brother constantly tries pressues me into getting something slower and more expensive as it's 'cooler'.

As for reggie... I'd say that it's quality, but uninspiring that they were going for. But showing an S40 grass tracking was fun...
