Default Xc90 4.4 V8 - Steering issue

Hi all -

Test drove a '10 XC90 v8 @116k miles. Car was in every good condition other than a leak from the power steering pump pulley & I presume the rack playing up... symptoms:

Turning right is fine - nice and smooth, but turning left stationary and you are met with real strong resistance, needing both hands to turn the wheel - kinda notchy. Revs at idle made no difference. When moving it is much better.

Can I presume for now the car will at least need a new pump and a rack? I checked the fluid and the level was good as was the colour. The owners have spent a small fortune maintaining the car and have offered a discount to buy - I'll phone an indi tomorrow but can I presume 1k+ to change both with a reconditioning rack.

P.s I did have a look underneath - no obvious leaks and the bushes looked good. Mot Advisory showed play in inner joints of steering rack.

Thanks

Jim
