Default C30 D5 Manual v Auto

Hello all,

Thinking about adding a C30 to the fold. Quite like the idea of a D5 around 57 to 58 reg. I do quite a few miles on the motorway so interested in the gearing in 6th on the manual and auto boxes (or is it 5th on the auto?).

A simple miles per thousand revs would be great.

Thanks in advance, for any help.

Cheers

If it's the same manual box that's in my C70, it's 35/1000 in 6th.

Don't know what the gearing will be like on the auto but it will be the 5-speed AW unit, and not recommended if you want performance or economy. It can't cope with the full 400Nm available from the engine, so autos are restricted to 350Nm. Even then it will be noticeably thirstier than the manual.

Thanks, must admit leaning towards the manual. Interested in the polestar remap that's on offer at the moment according to another thread.

I've got a V50 D5 Manual with the polestar remap and it'll pull 80 mph all day at just over 2000 rpm doing about 45-50 mpg

The autobox is crap. It was just about competitive when it came out in 2000 in the V70 and is hopelessly outdated now. The later D3/D4 cars got a newer 6 speed AW box that is quite a lot better. As mentioned the engine has to be detuned to 350NM of torque so as not to destroy it, and it's limited even more in the first two gears. It's dim witted and not even particularly smooth.

The biggest issue I have with the manual gearbox in my C70 D5 is that 1st and 2nd are really quite short, to the point that it's irritating and hard to make a quick but smooth start. From what I've seen I can get an easy 10MPG extra over a similarly driven D5 auto on the motorway.

The Polestar remaps are good and I have an MTE remap on my C70. It weighs about 500KG more than a C30 but I average 43mpg and get a genuine mid 50s on a long motorway run if I can stick with doing 60MPH or so.

Performance when on boost is strong in all gears, in the video below I didn't bother dropping out of 6th on the autobahn and in hindsight I think there was another 1/3rd of throttle travel left. I'd expect a C30 to be noticeably better than this due to the weight difference.

That 80 to 120 looked "progressive" , nice :-) Assume thats with the MTE ?

I have a shark map on 2010 xc90 auto (6) not sure how much the limiter on torque is set for the auto but has big impact up to 3k revs compared with standard. But with your c70 or c30 power to weight obviously makes a massive difference.

Interesting about the first two gears. The auto finds's itself in 3rd at about 20/25 mph and when in manual mode almost pointless having first.

Thanks for the iinfo, cheers

Thanks
