Question engine service urgent, poss fuel probelm

My trusty 55 reg xc90 has had the dreaded engine service urgent message and goes limp a few times over the last few days. It is only in the morning with the really cold weather. it always happens just as the car starts to drive up a steep hill, and then a few times after, but my wife describes it as stuttering/coughing then the message appears and goes to limp mode. Sounds like a fuel starvation problem. I have read on another thread that the fuel filter can get water in it and freeze. This sounds like it could be the problem. The thread also says that its an easy diy fix, if so where is it and can anyone detail how. I dont want to take it to the dealer as they will charge a fortune, and my local garage I use cannot link to the cars computer for the code, which is the norm from what I have read.
As far as i know the fuel filter has never been changed or even drained since I brought the car 3 and half years ago and its done 35k miles since then.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

It's under the car next to the engine.

It's in front of the drivers side rear wheel, you'll probably need a chain filter wrench and use a genuine filter,it's a 10 minute job.

The filter cartridge is easy to change but once you've done it switch ignition on for a few minutes at a time without starting the car.

You "should hear the fuel pump start to work and fingers crossed pump air in the system back to the tank.

Did mine last weekend. Got the urgent service error message as I got air in the system but by doing the above it cleared once the air was cleared.

I had the same problem on my car which gradually got worse and worse. After I changed the fuel filter the problem has not come back. Beware taking off the fuel filter takes considerable force. You will not remove it without a strap

It's on the service schedule. Hasn't it been serviced?

You could take it to Charlwood Volvo. They must be very close to you.

Charlwood volvo is about 10mins away, but very reluctant to take it as I went there when I first got it and had a few problems. had a problem with engine service req, which if you check my other posts I still have. they said they had found the fault and basically changed a few items and charged loads and never cured it.

It is likely to be the connection between teh throttle and the over throttle point under the engine cover - it costs 75p to replace, but my advice is to sell what is a useless machine

Suggest you use spell checker as all you input has at least one glaring spelling mistake.
