360 460 designations puzzled!!
Hi i don't know if anyone can confirm this without offending members but i was talking to a member the otherday and i mentioned that i had a 360 2.0ltr injection, and he said that it can't be 360's and 460's were 6 cylinder cars and that mine must have been a 6 cyl or the engine had been changed then i said i didn't think volvo did 300 and 400 series in 6 cylinder form ( sorry if this is long winded) i thought that it was just 164/5 and 264/5/2 designations ment 6 cylinder cars.
rather than get in to a debate i thought i could clear this up through the forum. many thanks simongl P.S like i said i don;t want to offend! |

RE: 360 460 designations puzzled!!
As you say, the 300 series cars were all 4 cylinder, ranging from 1.4 and 1.7 litre in the 340s to 2.0 carb in the the 360 GL/GLS/GLE and 2.0 injection in the 360 GLEi and 360 GLT.
Not so familiar with 460 engines but 100% certain that they were all 4 cylinder too. Sarge '99 V70 AWD |

True, they're four cylinders, despite the badge.
Shame though, wouldn't the 480 have been great with a socking great V8 under the bonnet!!!

over on the 480 europe forum, there is a guy that does his own ecu's and can have the 480 turbo pushing out over 200bhp.

RE: 360 460 designations puzzled!!
correct. volvos used to be badged in a model range-cylenders-doors system (so 242 = 2 seriees, 4 cylendars, 2 doors). in 82 (i think) this was changed to have just '0' on the end, and then in 82(i think) with the release of the 760 turbo and the 360, the 6 just came to mean a more upmarket model - before then there was a short run of 340s with 2 litre engines. the only real difference between a 740 turbo and 760 turbo is the interior and some external trim. the 400 series was labled as a 480 for the coupe, 460 for the saloon, and 440 for the hatch. this did kinda represent costs, as the 460 was a tiny bit more upmarket than the 440 (or maybe just didnt come with the really basic trims - i cant remember to be honest) and the 480 was in-between the 360 and the 240 in price when it was released.
960s all (afaik) use 6 cylender engines, and 940s are all 4 cylender with the exception of the diesel (i think). 850s were all 5 cylinder (why cant i spell that damn word!!). 240s were all 4 cylender and 260s all 6. a few people have put 6 cylender engines in a 360, and i've even seen a 12 cylender jag enigne in one (which makes it umm, a 420? carry the 1??) |
