Default static timing

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know if the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley directly corresponds to the timing mark on the crankshaft gear?

I cannot identify the mark on the pulley, it is 29yrs old and pitted all round the edges, as i can see the mark on the crankshaft gear, if i know these are in the same position i can mark the pulley from that.

many thanks
rich

Make sure the cam is lined up so that no1 is on the firing stroke, remove no1 spark plug and using a torch or blunt screwdriver move the piston to top dead centre, this will give you "0" degrees on the crank pulley so you can re mark it.

Ah ha! I hadn't looked at it that way thank you very much Les!

Had to do a dizzy change and I don't think it was set properly beforehand so I wanted to do a good "baseline" set up.

Thanks again

Default Reference check

I have just checked my Haynes about this, as I thought I had seen some pics.

The crankshaft pulley is fixed to a drive boss by six evenly spaced bolts. A round pin serves as a locating key. The drive boss is keyed to the crankshaft and fixed by the central bolt into the shaft.

The primary timing reference mark pair are on the crankcase and front sealing flange on the engine, behind the timing belt cover. When the primary marks co-inside, the round locating pin is at the 3 o'clock position and the 2nd fixing bolt anticlockwise from the pin is at 12 o'clock and in line with the primary reference.

In this position, the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is co-incident with the 0 degree mark on the timing belt cover graduated scale. The pulley mark is a shallow stroke located on the circumference of the pulley.

The above pin and bolt positions should get you into the ballpark. To locate the original mark, set up as above and transfer a pair of marks about 1/2 inch apart centred on the belt cover 0 to the face of the pulley, then advance the shaft about 30 to 40 degrees clockwise to clear the timing marks and drive belts.

Then clean the circumference of the pulley between the marks with fine emery cloth. The original timing mark will appear as the background is polished.

Thank you very much that's very helpful and informative.
I have the cover off now and the cam etc at TDC so I can clean up the the pulley as you say.
Thanks again
