That type didn't have an under the fuel tank brace, it was bumper bolts only and was a lower weight version.
I used to have one of those through the bumper towbars - awful thing, and puts far to much strain on the bumper mounts imho. The OEM estate towbar also bolts on via the bumper mounts, but is braced by a section that runs up against the spare wheel well, with bolts in between pretty much every strengthening flute. There is also a spreader plate inside the spare wheel well, and spacers for the bolts so that the flutes are not crushed. I'll try to dig it out soon & post up some pics.

I've seen a saloon towbar plate & that was 1000kg - if you ever find out whether the estate one is higher rated, I'd be very interested to know what it is, as that part of the plate on mine is damaged.

Paul - I have an under-tank type tow-bar on my Amazon Estate, with the spreader-plate adjacent the spare wheel - it was on the car when I bought it decades ago, but don't know make.

All I do know is, before towing regs got stiffer I used a towing dolly to tow a Volvo 164 some 70 miles of undulating roads, with no serious happenings, but the performance was down somewhat.... Also a PV from the welsh borders.

Before you ask, although I still have the car its not anywhere near here and I never remember seeing a plate on it.

This is the type that Paul H mentioned and is what is on my estate. There is no Volvo plate on it but there might have been one once. I've seen plates on other Volvo tow bars.
