Default Fuel system / emission warning light

Evening all.
240SE - The warning light second from the left came on this evening, the handbook says that it warns of a problem in the fuel / exhaust sytem and that urgent attention is needed as the car may no longer comply with emission regulations! At around 1500RPM there is a metalic 'rattling' noise. Ive had a poke around and cant see anything obviously loose - my first thought re the noise was the corrogated metal hose that comes from the radiator but this was fine. Does anyone think that this is the exhaust system? Anyway, Im going to book it into the garage asap - my usual garage (local) is no good as they dont have a courtesy car. I was thinking of using Phil Wittaker cars (Independant Volvo garage) near Slough - has anyone used them, and were you happy with the service?
Any comments suggestions etc - gratefuly accepted!
Thanks
Ian

Metallic rattling noise could be cat on way out which would put light on. Could be other things though.

You need to read the diagnostic codes to see what is causing the light to come on. Don't jump to conclusions until you know that.
eg the rattling could be pinking caused by faulty knock sensor, or weak mixture.

Point taken.

I have booked the car into Wittaker Volvo in Slough but they are busy and the earliest date I could get is 24th August (I also want a full service & cambelt change)
My dilema now is do I soldier on till then or is there a risk of anything nasty happening?
I thought that I would have a good look underneath on Saturday to see of any of the exhaust system is loose etc.

Comments / views anyone?
