5mm = OK 3mm is just ok , but change soon .. measure it accurately 5mm is just under half the material worn away .. but you cant go lower than 2mm of course .
remember It is not compulsory to press that middle pedal , you can drasticly reduce the wear by anticipating and changing down to gently slow the car .

How are the rear wearing ? A lousy driver on the brakes will not wear them ,that wear will be transferred to the front pads ... a gentle driver will wear the rear as the brakes are geared up to use the rear more for gentle driving . !

Perhaps go with some non Volvo brake pads. Akebono are very good, half the price and no more dust on the wheels. Not impossible for the original brakes to be too soft.

Is there any way i can get these pads tested once changed/ removed to see if they are faulty?

There may be nothing wrong with them.
Measure the thickness first to see if wear is excessive and premature.

There likely is however whats that going to cost you ?

As said check them to see whats what and if they are WTL replace them with either volvo pads or quality after market items such as pagid or textar , And get shut of those lead boots .

No lead boots. Trying to prove this to volvo who are trying to say the same. Had ds3 for years. Traded it in for this volvo. Still had original brake pads in.

well if you dont press the pedal they wont wear .. The life generaly i have found is anything from 36000 to 54000 miles front to rear balance varies , sometimes rear wear first , sometimes front . That is how it is . Citroen DS are not as heavy they have smaller discs and pads too , i have changed enough of them !

At the end of the day its a set of pads , Even if they were defective its not the end of the world and your never going to prove it without a lot if expense

Crack open a bottle of red , chill out and enjoy the rest of your life

PS Have your actually accurately measured the thickness to see what they are ?
