They do operate this way but on an automatic car the system is a bit inflexible compared with manual cars. When you brake and come to a stop with an automatic, even if it is only for a couple of seconds, the engine stops; in a manual car with a short stop you can leave it in gear, dip the clutch and the engine remains running.

You can come to a halt slowly in an Automatic, and just hold it gently on the brake and the S/S wont cut in.

I've tried that with mine. If you keep enough pressure on the brake to stop the car creeping forward, then the S/S will cut in. Ease up to a degree on the brake pressure, then the car will creep forwards just like any other automatic, albeit very slowly (there is still some brake pressure acting on the brakes). Hence why I am now in the habit of switching it off as soon as I start the car, and only switch it on when I know it will be of benefit.
