Default C70 non-starting (diagnosed)

I had just filled up and tried to start the car. It fired for 1 second and then stopped. After that it just turned over without catching. Not helped by the boss calling me on the mobile and an impatient person behind me at the pumps!

After 10 mins the car started and I drove to the local Volvo dealer. They pulled off some diagnostics which turned out to be "key not recognised". Their diagnosis is that the "chip" inside the key was intermittant or the transponder (in the ignition barrel that reads the key) was intermittant. I changed the key for a spare and it has been OK since.

Yes, I would have assumed a hot start problem or fuel injection relay but it appears that the computer's memory has diagnosed the problem.

PS Rybrooks did not charge me for the diagnosis so very pleased.

The ignition barrel antenna ring will be the problem, only £20 or so
Get it changed, my alternate key started playing up shortly after trying the other

Hi Richard,

not from personal experience, but yes we do seem to hear of intermittent problems with electrics here on the 850 sub-forum, and if wiggling the key back and forward a bit changes things it is quite likely to be the electrical part of the ignition switch.

HTH, Pete

Not all of the 850 have use the coded key...I would check if yours has a coded key to eliminate this by covering the black portion in foil and trying to start the car...if it starts you do not have a coded key and can concentrate on the ignition switch on the rear of the barrel...
Cheers
Jod
