Default V70 / XC70 urban MPG

Hi all, I'm looking to change my work vehicle and I'm interested in the V70 or XC70 as they appear to have a huge load area which will be great for my tools etc. I mainly drive short journeys and a lot of town driving.
MPG is important to me can anyone advise which engine or year would be best for economy please? Looking at official specs and they seem to vary a lot!

Thanks!

not petrol. you'll be lucky to see 22 (I put up with it because it's not a major concern for me I live right near work and weekly fuel is about £25, plus 3 kids so safety and space was the no1 decision)

depending what town driving you're doing as well is ULEZ a consideration because certain years of diesel will be no good

2004 euro 3 diesel seems to be the go to engine for fuel economy they can return 60 mpg on a steady motorway run if the engine is running well with no issues. there are no swirl flaps or dpf to worry about on this engine.

ULEZ not a concern up here in Lancashire (yet!)

yes 2.5 d5 euro 3 without any emissions control. identified by the all black engine cover the 2004 /5 facelift models had most of the earlier models faults ironed out .dim and auto box problems. mileage should not be a problem on a well maintained car i have one with 248k and they have been known to last 500k.

Agreed with above. Euro 3 diesel engines are far more economical. Oddly enough, euro 4 engines (2006 onwards) are worse on fuel!

Long term average on my 2003 euro 3 d5 manual s60 is 41.1, it'll do 50 on a longer run, and around 37 on short journeys alone.

Long term average on my 2007 euro 4 d5 auto v70 is 33.5, it'll do 42 on a longer run, and around 31 on short journeys alone.

I don't think I'd have another ph2 euro 4, I had to get this one on very short notice with limited choice, but the TF80 gearbox is miles better for driveability than the older AW55 I had in a previous v70.

And yet our 2006 2.4D has just completed a 1200 mile round trip to Germany towing a car trailer - loaded to about 1740kg for half of that journey - and averaged better than 36 mpg.
