It may be that the dowels are not strictly necessary. They may be there only to help line up bolt holes. If you're sure you dom't need them just grind them off.

Unhappy How on earth is the cross member going to fit!!

As always, thanks for the help.

Right, the dowels came out of the bellhousing with a gentle bit of persuasion so all good there. I'm crossing my fingers that I can pick up the shortened prop tomorrow and I can then test the everything fits together. At the moment the bellhousing, gearbox with overdrive are all in place so I should be able to see what alterations need to be made to the crossmember. I am going to hold off doing anything until I bolt up the propshaft and bearing carrier so I'm 100% on the actual vertical position of the gearbox. I'm currently unsure of the following:

1. The original crossmember bolts via a rubber mounting to a bracket on the rear of the gearbox (old gearbox is an M40). Is a gearbox with overdrive unit (in my case an M410) still supported in the same place, for example in this instance at the rear of the gearbox.

2. It was mentioned before that there are crossmember mounting holes further back on the chassis, should I be thinking of using these at all.

Cheers

Tony

I have all this to come yet so look forward to the replies you get.
I haven't got as far as you yet and am dreading the crossmember hurdle when i come to it!
I know my gearbox assembly did have the bracket and rubber mount on the rear of the gearbox so i am presuming that they mount in a similar way, but i do know that a different rubber is listed for the overdrive cars so their must a something somewhere that isn't the same!
I have a crossmember from an Amazon that had the D type set up that i am trying to fit, so hopefully that will be of help when i get the 2 side by side to look at!

I have a M410 164 crossmember off the car if photos would be of any help?

Also, I am part-way through moving to a new workshop, so I am hopeful that with relocating most of my parts, my other crossmember will turn up. This is a 164 M400 cross-member which I modified to fit the overdrive gearbox.

If I find it, the modified crossmember is promised to Carlo (WPR678B), but maybe he'd lend it to you Tony, to test fit and make a copy?

John

I'm sure we can sort something out between us all.
Let's hope it turns up now!

Right, i've had a crawl around underneath the car today and measured everything up and unless i am missing something, it appears the existing crossmember i have got fitted (original to the car as far as i know) should take the M41 and overdrive unit fine!?
Dimensionally from the backplate of the engine to the mounting for the rubber it is the same on both my standard 4 speed box and the overdrive box.
The Amazon crossmember that had an M41 + overdrive on is WAY to small for sure!

It won't, 140 crossmember is overdrive specific. 120 series is not.

Do you know where the difference lies then please?
The only thing that could possibly foul is the area of the overdrive unit where the drain plug is fitted from what i could see today?

The overdrive will foul the cross member. It can be mnade to work by altering the cross member, but it isn't a straight bolt up.
