Help please - Engine wouldnt turn off.

Hi,
I have recently bought a 2022 XC90 Ultimate petrol mhev, and still aquainting myself with its many features.
Yesterday, I had a most peculiar experience. When stopping my journey, I turned off the engine, but it simply continued to run, no matter how many times I tried. Im not sure, but I think I eventually managed by selecting drive then putting it into N and park, but cant be certain.
Is there a particular correct method to turning off the engine, or is something seriously amiss? Its rather concerning as I am rather apprehensive about this happening again. In the meantime, if it happens again, what is the best way to cut the engine?
Any advice or suggestions would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

It will not turn off in Drive, always put it in Park to turn off the engine.

Yes and no nu11eaf. If you have a conventional auto shifter you do indeed have to put into park to switch off. If you have a joystick type shifter (and I think auto handbrake switched on) you can turn off in D and the car does everything else.

On the OP'S 2022 car selecting park is nothing to do with the drive/neutral/reverse selector it is a button marked P immediately behind the selector. You have to have set P before turning the engine off.

Thanks for both replies. I started it up just now, selected drive, and the engine turned off, with drive still selected, so that puts me back to square one, in that I may have a problem which could potentially arise at any time...

Thanks Hadajag - I replied before your post came up. I did not select P just now, turned on, selected drive, then turned off succesfully,which is unfortunate, as I would have known this was the issue.

Not sure that is true. Mine also has a P button and the joystick controller. I never press P before turning off. The car does everything for you.

I think this difference is down to the model year. The post 2021 hybrids have considerable differences to the earlier cars.

If you have auto hold/auto handbrake on, then stopping the engine with the dial with auto brake on will switch off the engine.

If not, you need to select P to switch off.

This is for the non physical shifter of course.
