Engine 850: B5234T/2.3/20v/T5: - rough idle and lack of power

Well here i am back again with another problem, hope you guys can give me some clues were to start looking .Wife came home last night and greeted me with something wrong with the car,she had been out in it all day put some petrol in in the morning then done a couple of trips about 15 miles each no problem, stopped of at supermarket came to start car and it has a very rough idle and no pulling power.She says it feels like its running out of petrol plus there was a strong smell of petrol ,not had chace to drive it myself yet as it was wet windy and dark .CHANGED RADIATOR about 3 weeks ago could i have dislodged anything .Dont have a code reader or know how to use one if anybody near me in batley west yorkshire has one and could read my codes if any would be very gratefull.By the way its auto if that makes any difference.THANKS FOR ANY INFORMATION.

Sounds like an ignition problem - one or more cylinders ain't firing. The petrol you can smell would be unburnt petrol going straight out the exhaust.

The first suggestion would be to take out the plugs - it might be obvious from the state of the plugs as to which one ain't behaving. The non-firing one(s) will be wet with petrol.

If it's an older car with a single coil and distributor, I'd then suspect the plugs, then the leads to the dissy, then the rotor, then the dissy cap itself.

Another possibility is that in changing the rad you dislodged an earth strap somewhere?

Another possibility is partially-blocked fuel lines. When the car was re-fuelled, had it been allowed to run very close to empty? It might have some sludge in the fuel line or filter.

You mention codes - is the engine light coming on?

Which engine type does the car have?

No lights coming on on dashboard except arrow light flashed when it was about to stall.
petrol tank was not too low when petrol put in.It is a 96 model with the socket under the ashtray. going to go see if it will start and take it for a run now it has stpped raining will update if I notice anything different from my wifes discription of symptoms.

Think I might have found the problem, large plastic pipe from intercooler to throttle body had come adrift, must not have tightend jubilee clip when radiator was changed, replaced and retightend, now seems to be running fine, fingers crossed. Could this pipe have caused this problem?
