Default Remote battery

Have issues with opening the car using the remotes.
Replaced batteries a few weeks back for new CR2403 after getting message on dash.
Daugher complained last night that she could not lock the car, went out pressed the button and it closed. Today nothing at all, both remotes dead (car start fine) I fiddled with remotes and batteries and eventually got the car locked but obviously have an issue. Will replace batteries again to eliminate duff batteriesfor. One question, what is the small copper clip for in the battery compartment, both fell out and I can for my life not work out what they are for or their placement, nothing obvious for them to do but they are quite an elabotare shape and design so must have some function or they would not be in there in the first place.
