There's plenty of cheap kits on eBay that are fairly easy to fit. I fitted a (£16) kit to a Fiesta, but I'm not sure what's directly behind the bumper on your V70 when you drill the 4 holes. Wiring is pretty simple, the main power lead just splices into the reverse light with a scotch clip. There's really not much else to it.

I fitted one of these cheapo kits to my car many moons ago.
I remember that I found somewhere the Volvo kit/ fitting instructions. This gave the height and dimensions either side of centre for the sensor positions. This was important because the radio antenna is on the right hand side of the panel. It also shows the fixings and their location.
The panel has to come off in order to fit the sensor retaining clips. You can`t get your hand up inside to do this without.
The panel comes off fairly easily. Just 4 or 5 nuts inside undone using a socket extension. There are some rivets to remove in the wheel-arch liner so some replacements required. There is a method of unclipping the panel from the rear quarter as you remove and re-fit. A second pair of hands would be helpful but it is possible single-handed.
Route the wires through the grommet that would be used for tow-bar cables.
The power wire is spliced into the reverse lights and a ground point created for the earth wire.
There is no problem with Can-bus if the power take-off is central about the reverse lights. Taking it directly from one light cluster may have a voltage/current differential that Can-bus will detect. You can run a wire from each reverse-light and splice the 2 into 1.

Are there any tricks for installing the sensors around a tow ball?

I was going for a beeper, but I am now very tempted by the camera selection on ali express:
https://aliexpress.com/wholesale?cat...versing+camera

You can get the cameras in any shape and size and you can even get a wireless transmitter, so you don't have to drag the cable all the way to your dash.
I don't have a screen on my dash, but perhaps a 5" screen with a wireless transmitter and a 9v battery strapped to its back would work? Looking at the prices, the whole set-up would be under £30. That beats the official £500 camera kits...

Has anyone installed any aftermarket cameras?

On a previous V70, I fitted a £20 reversing sensor kit from ebay. Sensors were pre-painted in silver & kit came with a hole saw for drilling the bumper. Definitely better to remove the bumper as there is a metal plate (for the aerial) & polystyrene mouldings inside which would otherwise get in the way.

I fitted the LED display in the plastic trim near the tailgate so I could see it when looking backwards (either directly or via rear view mirror).

If you want to be really fancy why not consider a reversing camera instead.
I got a kit off Ebay and it was less faffing about to fit than sensors. And you get a like screen which comes on when you select reverse.

Here's the link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2820941836...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
