Default Try the Volvo freedom test drive.

The first Volvo freedom test drive in Ireland happened over the weekend here in Athlone.

It was fantastic! I currently have a '00 S40 but thinking of moving to an S60 so I only wanted to take one out for a spin.

I booked the car a couple of weeks ago from the website and turned up at the Hodson Bay on Saturday morning. I registered, handed over my license and car keys and signed a T&C form and that was it.

I was brought to an S60 2.0T, given a two minute run down to ensure I wasn't going to destroy it and then shown two maps. I could choose from red and green routes, each being about 30+ miles long and signposted. Both routes were very well chosen to provide a nice mix of driving. What an engine. I'd been told before buying the S40 not to drive the S60 as I'd never be happy with it. Man, were they right!

When I came back I was asked if I wanted anything else so I took an S40 1.6D - a real let down from the 2 liter turbo! I decided to choose a different route, again signposted and well thought out.

When it came to the third car I asked for some advice from one of the assistants. He recommended the C70 T5. I was a bit worried I'd look like a pratt in a bright red convertible. I probably did, but it didn't matter I was having too much fun. It had a Geartronic gearbox which took a bit of getting used to but all round great fun. I didn't even feel the need to put the roof up.

Finally I went back to the S60 again just to keep it fresh in my mind.

There's no sales pitch and it's all very relaxed. Three hours, four cars, 150 miles of great driving and free coffee and biscuits.

It was really disappointing to get back into my weak 109 bhp S40. If there was a dotted line to sign to drive away in the S60 I'd have done it and suffered the consequences.

A great way to waste a Saturday morning.

Two more left in Ireland, Kildare in October and Cork in November.
