I bought a cheap bluetooth ELM 327 OBD reader for under £4, and I can confirm it works on my SPA XC90 inscription using the free Torque lite app, it arrived in the post today and I tried it out and pleased to say I have no logged fault codes.
Sadly it would not connect to the ECU on my Defender TD5 though.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread, but I am also looking for something proven to read a MY 2020 XC60's basic codes.

Last month I was driving from WA to AZ via ID, MT, WY, UT and of course just outside Cody WY my in-warranty 2020 T6 XC60 threw a solid yellow CEL. The nearest Volvo dealer was in Billings MT, 100+ miles in the wrong direction and none of the vehicle dealers in town I tried (GM, Ford, VW) could read the Volvo at all, and nor could the recommended independent shop. No one's even high-end 'pro' OBD-II reader could establish any sort of connection with the car.

My local AZ dealer assured me that a solid yellow would not injure my car further if I drove it so I had to continue on the journey. I was somewhat anxious that I was killing my catalytic converter with each mile.

That is absolutely unacceptable. Like others in this thread I had thought that the basic emissions set of codes had to be readable by any basic tool. On reaching home I tried both of the code readers which I had and none of them could get anywhere. I could have been plugging them into a potato for all the good they were.

As it turned out there was a crack in an evap line which draws vapors from the gas tank lest they leak to atmosphere. A quick fix and absolutely nothing to do with the fuel delivery, combustion, and stoichiometric emissions control. But, with nice big displays and more computers than a spacecraft onboard it would have been nice to have an incantation of buttons which would have exposed a code, even if not an english-language (or swedish) description of the fault. Grrrr.

So anyway, I want to buy a code reader which can talk to the car - if only for basic diagnostics - which I can stuff into the well next to the spare tire and carry with me.

Any proven ones? Not looking for should dos and oughtas. Looking to buy something which someone else with a recent SPA Volvo has and knows to work.

Thanks!

Frank.

Yes it fault finds and resets fault codes, it also winds off the electric parking brake to change pads.

Default ODB scannner that works

2019 V60 D4, the £4 ebay ELM 327 reader I bought first could read revs odo etc but the Normalised trigger for soot level in Car scanner stayed blank which ever profile set.
I tried again with the slightly more expensive Edasion OBD2 Bluetooth 4.0 Diagnostic Scanner Code Reader for iPhone iOS Android iPad PC at £12.99 from Amazon. This one reads all the sensors properly.

Could you share with me which sensors are recognizing with this OBD. Like some screenshots from car scanner app all sensor tab.
I am interesting in engine oil temp sensor, DPF temp too
