Here we go, the saga of my N/S headlight bulb failing recently has taken a new route. Volvo headlight (Valeo 30698854)
The car had been sat a week while on holiday, and when starting it on my return the error message "dip beam bulb failure" came on. To that end I bought 2 replacement bulbs, and after some fun bending my hands into shapes best left for soft wire, the bulb swap didnt work and the light is still off. Fuses checked. Removed the ns bulb and replaced the bulb with the other new bulb, made no difference still off. So today I plugged the car into my Icarsoft obd reader, and got the following error codes. 8F18 - https://www.dtcdecode.com/Volvo/CEM-8F18 1A5C - https://www.dtcdecode.com/Volvo/CEM-1A5C Wasn't expecting to get these but it did get me thinking why my ns headlight is off, something I did notice while grubbing about inside the headlight, the inner reflectors are loose inside the lamp housing, I checked the other good headlight and there is no movement in it. I intend to have a closer look at the actuator motor when I can, as it appears the mechanism is disconnected from the headlight reflector hence it is loose. Do we have any Volvo headlight experts (I know we have) who can give me a bit of advice please. I had assumed the ballast resistor had gone when the bulb wouldn't light, but now the actuator motor is playing up Im wondering whether this is the cause ? Thank you in advance. Ivan

Think your problem is in the baseplate of the reflector.
It has a tilting mechanism and elektromotor wich tilt the complete reflector when lights are on and highness is engaged… Only way to switch this unit is by taking the headlight aart.. good luck…. |

Thanks for the reply, it feels like the pivot for the headlamp adjust is disconnected from the mechanism that holds/rotates it. However I only noticed this after I had removed the bulb clip and tried unsuccessfully to remove the bulb.
I plan to drop the bumper off and remove the ns headlight, examine and then make a few decisions where I go next. The ballast is looking like the culprit at the moment, however I did watch a video yesterday about "droopy headlight and bulb off" as being down to the ballast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzrMtEEDifU&t=8s So once the bumper is off I can check function and then sort part numbers out. I think I might of popped something when I tried to get the bulb out, hopefully I didnt pop it too much.... I might be back to pick your expertise @onewheel or even change the lenses while its all pulled down and be done with it.
