Honestly you won't be the first or last to neglect a redblock cambelt, every one I buy/inherit seems to be massively overdue a cambelt change.

My 940 was 4 years overdue
My latest 760 was 10 years overdue
My last 360 I bought and sold last year was last done in 1999 bit it had only done 3k miles in those 22 years
All the other redblocks I've had have also been overdue but I forget how overdue!

So you should be fine but just get it done ASAP using a genuine belt as they're around £15-£20.

Thank you, that's reassuring. I'm fairly sure that the last cambelt was a genuine Volvo one, which is also slightly reassuring.

The really bad news is that the garage can't fit in until the 19th, so I'm likely to be on tenterhooks each time I drive!
.

The B200 has raised crown pistons so does bend the valves if the cam belt lets go.

Make sure you get the correct belt. Recently had a car in that had been serviced by a local garage only to find they had fitted the wrong belt!

I've just lookled back through old threads here and discover I posted in 2009 that I had experimented on my then Torslanda (B200F engine) by carefully turning the crank by hand with the belt off and confirm classicswede's warning - the B200 engine IS an interference model, and so MIGHT damage itself if the belt broke.

Some people have been lucky, and either by chance the cam has stopped in a position where the spinning crank did not cause a valve to hit a piston, or it did hit but again by luck only gently and no damage was done.

I'm counting my blessings. Had the belt changed on Tuesday and the young mechanic said it was showing signs of cracking, so I think I was lucky! More expensive than I expected though, the belt kit was £68 plus VAT, and a couple of hours labour.

Thanks, everyone, for all the helpful advice, very much appreciated.

Did they use genuine Volvo? The belt is around £15-£20 and tensioner is £45 with trade discount so the price sounds a bit expensive if it didn't include VAT.

The belt and tensioner were £68 in total, plus VAT, so not far off your price. Not sure if it's genuine Volvo, depends what they were able to source. They never overcharge, under if anything, so I guess the two hours labour must be right, though I didn't think it took as long last time but I could be wrong. The belt alone last time was £15, but that was nine years ago!

Two hours labour charge for a 40 minute job is nice work if you can get it!

It is good that your motor car is fixed though :-).
