If the blower speed is sporadic, then the fault is at the heater control panel.

You could try using a soldering iron and heat up the solder in the contacts. If this does not fix the problem, you can replace the potentiometer. Or get another second hand unit.

I can't thank you enough for this outstanding guide. I used it to replace the just the transistor. My fan blows as intended now.

Reading this thread reminded me I have a boxed brand new resistor for a phase 1 non climate. part no.30875042. Can't remember why I bought it or why I didn't fit it in the end, but the car it was for is long gone. Anyone want it for the cost of postage? It is an actual resistor not the (I presume later) transistor type.

That's very nice of you. However, you will find out that the resistors on the Phase 1 (pre-Ford) S/V40s are a lot more durable and I have never read a post where someone had a problem with them. Exactly the opposite on Phase 2 S/V40s with cheaper crap installed in them

Probably why I still have it! Can't remember what the problem was at the time or how I cured it.

Default a/c on-off-on-off

Hi. I've been reading up about intermittent problems with heating fans, dodgy solder joints on pots, the resistor behind the glove box and faulty a/c control boards. I'm none the wiser as to where to start.

Symptoms: All works fine, a/c light green, fan running. Then suddenly a/c light turns red and fan stops blowing. Then it goes back to working fine. Then it stops again. When it stops working, the fan stops: no variation, it's either on (to whatever it's set to) or off. If I switch off a/c, I get the same effect, i.e. the fan stops blowing, but the a/c light stays red.

Should I start by resoldering the pot joints and checking their operation, or should I start with the resistor under the glove box?
