I suspect age has something to do with it in both directions, those of us who are older grew up with simple to fix cars which a lot of people would have done a lot of work themselves even if they were not enthusiasts, younger people have had cars with increasing levels of complexity that put off the amateur. On the flip side as I get older the prospect of rolling around on the cold hard garage drive getting wet and dirty appeals a lot less so some jobs get sent to a trusted independent.

I've done as much as I can since I had my first car, including engine rebuilds. I only sub out the jobs I can't or don't want to do these days.

Certainly the complexity doesn't help. I'm pretty comfortable with the smartphone based apps I've used in the past (Carly and a couple of others) and I might have a look for something similar for the V70. I used a laptop-based package on the BMW for a while, but for my purposes I found the Carly app very easy to use.
If I had access to a pit or a lift I'd be tempted to do more in the way of preventative maintenance perhaps - if there were a few more hours in the day!

A very similar situation here, too.

I'll do all mechanical jobs which don't require engine or gearbox removal (due to a lack of facilities, rather than ability). I've never got into bodywork repairs - spraying outdoors isn't recommended!

Also, as I've got older, those 'helpful mates' from my youth have disappeared - and my OH sadly shows no interest in assisting whatsoever. Changing spouse would be a bit drastic...

Working outdoors is also a problem. I've lost count of the times when the weather has been fine during the working week - only to pee it down at the weekend

Thankfully, having worked all my life in 'high-tech' electronics, the electrical systems on cars pose no problem

First job for me with our V70 will be to take a look at the washer bottle leak. It only leaks a small amount when filled to the brim, and one of the service invoices notes the leak and suggests the joint between bottle and filler neck may be at fault. There are a few posts on washer system leaks, which I'll be rereading.
