Default Is rust on wheel arches common in XC60?

hi
I am looking for XC60 2009-2011 but found one with low milleage 108k but there are some rust bubbles showing up on the wheel arches - please see the picture.
Could you please let me know if you had this sort of problem and how much did it cost to fix? Or maybe the car must have been in some accident because volvo never rusts
Regards

No. They don’t rust. That’s either a quality issue or more likely it’s been damaged. I wouldn’t buy it.

Certainly not , that's a poor repair , maybe a cheap not genuine poorly painted wing .. it is well protected up there from road muck .

That’s probably sensible. I think if you look at another 25 you won’t find a single one like that. Good decision.

The plastic wheel arch liner is a crap design and clearly rubs on the folded return of the wing at 10 o'clock offside and 2 o'clock nearside. Over time the paint is rubbed off completely and the metal rusts.

I've looked at half a dozen used XC60s this year alone and they ALL had signs of this to some degree all in exactly the same place. Some had proper nasty brown flaky rust set in others paint bubbling and some just rub marks down to undercoat/primer.

There are threads on other forums about this too so it's not the odd damaged car or Friday afternoon job it's all of them.

Check yours now and nip it in the bud before it gets worse.

If only! I looked at another one today Aug 2016 registration and it had rust at 2 o'clock passenger side.

I'm yet to find one that does not have this issue (luckily my current XC60 only has rub marks so far and is not down to primer or metal yet so I can take some preventative steps).

You need to ease the liner away from the metal to see the damage but I reckon you'll be lucky to find 1 in 25 that does not have this.

Volvo has a 12 year paint warranty if rust comes through from the inside ... ...
That one has obviously not been inspected for many years and left to fester . Accident repaired cars can also have this problem .

My 2015 XC60 has that issue on the drivers side - i.e. paint rubbed off and light surface corrosion. But it has done 145k...

The one in the picture from the OP is different - that's perforating corrosion from the inside. My guess (same as others) it's had a new wing and it has been treated/painted to very poor standard.

Yes and as the (designed in) 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock abrasive damage caused by the front wheel arch liners is not perforation from inside but surface corrosion I fear Volvo will almost certainly decline any warranty claim for it.

It looks like I'll have to remove the liners at some point and do a bit of rubbing down and re-painting. OK you can't see the area affected but if left it will no doubt spread zinc plating or not. Pretty poor show really for a supposed 'rugged' design after only 5 or 6 years.

I haven't had a car with rust on since the bloody 80s!
