I don't know for definite, but I'd imagine the only way something could go wrong is if your 12V battery died during the process or something like that.

Not sure that's even an issue as the process restarts if you interrupt it halfway through.

I've just updated mine and it was done over 5 or 6 journeys. This is probably the 4th or 5th time I've done it and never had an issue except for a couple of USB errors on previous times but they cleared after powering off and removing/re-inserting the USB

Does anybody know what mapping is normally installed to a UK spec car? I see the Volvo website has lots of country options, but it seems to be just one country (or UK and Iceland in this case) or the whole of Europe, including Russia and various 'Stans. That seems a bit OTT, though it'd be helpful to be able to include, say, BeNeLux, France, Germany, Italy and Spain/Portugal alongside the UK.

What I'm asking is: does updating overwrite the old database, so if I just update the UK, it'd delete any 'non-UK' data, and if so, what 'non-UK' data is likely to be there at the moment?

Or does it just update what you offer it, so I could do a country by country update, over time say, and it'd just update that data when I plugged it in?

Edit, my mistake. For my car, I need the 2014 version, not the 2016 one, and that's Europe-wide.

Yup.

Just updated mine, and it completed over numerous stop/starts of the car.
Seemless really.
As to how good the update is, time will tell.

I press the only exit button on the console aaaand...

Obviously I need a new USB (again), but is there a way of taking the USB out of the slot without screwing the entire system?
Mine did the same - pressed the exit button and left the stick in - it carries on doing the update. Had to press the exit probably 5-6 times during the update but it completed the update and all seems to e working fine. I think I had the same problem last time I did an update & the satnav worked fine afterwards.

I've just done mine. It auto-detected the USB stick and set off, estimating 1hr 50mins to update. I've since done a handful of short trips, maybe 10-20 mins max each time. It completed after the latest of these, yesterday, and I doubt I've actually used the car for over an hour during that process, so it all seems to have worked fine. It appears to update the Gracenote database at the same time, so it tells me.

I'm hoping it has updated the bit of the A14 near Cambridge, which threw me a bum steer when I went there a month ago and cost me 20 mins, and using Google maps on my phone, trying to get back on track.

dammit. Mine did exactly the same, except I pulled the USB.....now copying files again as I assumed the download was corrupted, so once it's completed copying onto the PC, i'll try another upload into car. I'd rather faff around like this than pay the dealer £100+ for it. Shame the bluetooth won't mirror WAZE off the phone.

wish I'd read this BEFORE pulling the USB the first time it said "download failed. USB unreadable" and pressing exit and removing the USB....back to square one for me.

Re-inserted USB, left it uploading, 4 restarts after the 'unreadable' message, and it completed. Hope its OK when I actually GO somewhere...thanks to everyone for the helpful comments above.
