My XC90 was serviced in December, and post that the “Engine Service Required” message on. Level on dipstick was over Max, so following threads, sucked 1/2 litre out. Level on dipstick now about 3/4. Haven’t done a lot of miles since, (wonder why) but hoping message will clear eventually! If it doesn’t in a few weeks, I intend to take out another 1/2 litre out and see how that goes.

Will keep y’all updated, thanks again.

Message did go after a couple of weeks, but then reappeared a month later.
Took it to Yeovil Volvo, who (at no charge) confirmed it was high oil level and drained a further 1/2 litre, clearing the message again. The car has not been used a lot recently and only short journeys. Apparently there is a mechanism that dumps a little superfluous diesel in the sump on engine shutdown, raising the level in the sump.

This is a oil level test on my Volvo XC70 D5 EURO 4 engine
