yes...they are starting to perform more and more stop checks.

Even if you use red diesel just the once, it stains the inards of the engine/tank and you can tell it's been used in the past over x amounts of tanks full of the normal stuff, where X is well over 50 tanks I belive.

I also thought red diesel was of poorer quality.

Yes, belive it is - well, it's the same diesel- but it doesn't have the cocktail of additives added as you see at the better named pumps.

From what i noted at car park it was mainly private hire cabbies getting done..iirc it was about 11 cabbies brought to justice that day..my car wasnt even started at the time they approached my i was still carting my trolley about 6 ft from car as i clicked the remote control .."excuse me sir..can we have word please?"
A friendly chap there mentioned like viper 50 tankfulls to wipe any evidence of red derv away plus traces in exhaust can be give aways..

My understanding is that it is simply "dyed" and the quality is no inferior.

What I object to is I am paying the going rate for my fuel and they are running around on cheap fuel conning us all and charging the full rate in there taxis. Just not playing the game. Glad justice is handed out.

It isnt inferior just theres not VAT etc on it and its purpose is for agricultral or heating use only and NOT to be used in road going vehicles..

The red is a dye that is added to show that appropriate road duty hasn't been paid on it. Even if you dilute red with normal the dye is still detectable.
