Default Intermittant gear select problem

I have a 2002 s40 t4. I was driving a long with no problems when i went to change down the gears because of traffic i found it difficicult to select a gear. this then changed to could not select any gear. I managed to limp the car into a car park space and went off to my appointment. On returning to the car the gears could be selected. I drove the car 20 miles without problem but the gear selecting problem has returned. Its like i am locked out of the gears. This is very intermittant, the rac has not been able to locate the problem and my mechanic has just put in a new clutch kit and slave cylinder but on driving away the problem occured again. There is no play when the gear is selected... Your thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated. as I am due to drive to Cornwall(300 miles) in a months time for two weeks holiday.

This could be clutch drag , does it go into gear immediately when you turn the engine off ?

Default intermittant gear select problem

I picked the car up from the mechanics after the repair. A complete new clutch kit andd slave cylinder were fitted. I literally drove the car 400 yds from the garage and the problem came back. I drove back to the garage and told the mechanic. This was yesterday. I have driven the car for about 30 miles but not been able to replicate the problem. My mechanic told me to give him a call on monday with the results of the test driving.

He showed me the old clutch so i know it has been changed.

This has only happened once and did not require me to stop the engine since the repair so it is difficult to give an answer to your question.

I will be doing further road tests today.

Default intermmittant gear selected

So I have been driving the car off and on for 2 hours and this is what happened

2nd to 1st wouldnt engage. stopped turned off engine selected 1st ok

4th gear wouldnt disengage pumped clutch pedal selected 3rd ok

5th gear to 4th couldnt select pumped the clutch engaged

There were several times i could feel that it was close to not selecting the chosen gear but in the end it did select it.

I rest my foot on the clutch pedal a lot and it depresses it to take up the loose slack......but after driving a mile it felt like it released and would then go down further.... this would happen twice but no further.

I have purchased new dot 40 oil and a new master cylinder which will arrive monday. The oil will be changed saturday

Not relevant to fixing it, but resting your foot on the clutch isn't a great thing to be doing.

In light of the new information i would say the clutch slave cylinder is sticking in the bell housing causing the clutch not to clear fully. ( clutch drag ) .

The hydraulic fluid was pretty disgusting and we drained a good proportion from the resevoir and cleaned it out. we managed to bleed three of the four brakes with new fluid, about a litre was used.....This has made a vast difference... and even the clutch feels better.

The fourth bleed nipple wouldnt open and didnt want to force it without a spare

A new slave cylinder was put in when the clutch was changed.

I will be picking up a master cylinder on monday.

On the 20 mile drive home there was no problems. I will give the car a better test drive tomorrow...

Thanks to everyone for the input and I will keep you updated.

The mechanic will be fitting the clutch master cylinder on friday and a complete bleed through of the hydraulic system.

Naster cylinder fitted and clutch an brake fluid has been changed.. The car is working fine.... Guess a seal in the master cylinder was to blame for a lot of the problems... Thanks to Everyone for your input
