Default 240GLT Autobox fault

The Autobox on my wife's 1988 240GLT has developed an odd fault. It randomly drops into (what I think is known as) sport mode - usually engaged by pressing the switch on the side of the gear lever. I suspect an electrical fault but before I dive in does anyone else have any thoughts?

Cheers,

John Schofield.

The switch on the side of the gear selector on the 240 GLT is not really a sports mode switch. It is really a top gear blocking switch. When selected, there should be an arrow indicator light on the dash and while this is on, the auto box will not upshift to top gear. It will only stay in second (or third if you have a four speed auto box). A helpful option when towing and driving in situations when there is a lot of searching between top and the next down.

From similar previous posts there is the possibility that there is an electrical connection fault but I am sure that those who replied in the past will repeat their words of wisdom here for you.

This happened on my 240 there is a relay under the center air blower consul the wires on the back of the relay are prone to dry joins re-soldering usually does the trick.

Thanks Shilton,

I pulled the relay today - a white cased one marked Hella 1347764 - and sure enough it had dodgy soldering.

Good tip!

John
