Default Help! Ignition lock faliure

One of my friends friends decided to get into my car yesterday and muck about with it. Im annoyed now because the ignition lock is knackered.

He was being too boisterous with the steering wheel and it locked I think.

Today, needing to go somewhere I come to unlock the wheel- wheel becomes free and moves all the way. Fine.

However, the lock won't even get to stage I it gets about half way- enough to unlock the wheel but not to switch on the ignition.

Please help,

I need the car for work tomorrow. Its a 240 gle 1987

It does sound as if either the lock mechanism is damaged or the switch is broken jamming the lock.

To establish which it is you need to remove sufficient trim to get at the lock body and remove the two screws/bolts that hold the switch assembly to the lock.

With the switch removed, if the key will turn the fault is in the switch.

If not the trouble is in the lock.

If you are confident that the lock won`t come in accidentally you can start the car by operating the switch with a screw driver.

For how to change the lock assembly click the link below (instructions are for the 700 series but your lock is basically the same)
