If the fuel pump noise stops when you fill up with petrol it usually means the in-tank pump has gone, so the main one has to work harder. When the tank is full it has less lifting to do.
I'd look into it before the main one fails.
Nice car!
Don't give a thought to the mileage - it isn't even run in yet. I bought mine with 180,000 and it is just approaching 300,000. My local Volvo dealer knows of two with 400,000 plus.

Thanks guys!

I shall check out the fuel pump in the tank.

I bought some Autoglym cleaning products today (spending my car boot sale profits already!)

Anyone any ideas for cleaning off all that lovely cigar nicotene off the headlining?

He looks great! :)

Is the headlining vinyl or fabric? If it's vinyl, I have found that neat 'Flash' liquid does a good job at removing stuborn dirt. On fabric, one of the proprietary aerosol foam sprays should do the job.

Thanks James,

It is Vinyl, so I'll get the marigolds on and try some Flash liquid at the weekend. I'll have to do it 'on the quiet' though, else the missus will be getting me doing the kitchen floor as well if she sees me with my paws on her cleaning products....!

I like the lemon 'flavour' Flash best as not only does it smell great, it will help neutralise the odour of tobacco. I used it on a 1990 Fiesta several years ago with excellent results.

'Cif Oxygel' is pretty good as well. Good luck :)

What I need is a sure fire way to clean my 740's fabric headlining without destroying it. It is 100% sound and damage free (V. rare on an old 740, and the car's USP) but it is impregnated with 14 years worth of general grime. No cigarette smoke though- It's a non-smokers' car!

Car looks great. If when you go to OZ, you would like to sell the car on to a VERY interesting future, please check out my message in this forum "Advice on 240 turbo" 9 May 2004...

Cheers,

Have read the message(s). Now I am really interested! Sounds like a real interesting project, the sort I'd love to do if I had the imagination and time!

Still waiting to hear about Oz - Immigration being jobsworths and taking a looooooooong time about making decisions...

Meantime, Fred is getting some well deserved attention to clean up the interior from what must have been 5 years of dust! Cleaning up nicely! (Very 'therapeutic'!)

What a smart car! How is it on fuel economy? Really want a Volvo now - but boyfriend is still unsure (he would rather go for another characterless Vauxhall - something like a Cavalier estate!).

Keep me informed... I'll do the same as I'm actively looking for the right 245 base car. T5 engine is now the favoured option... tape measures out this weekend to check it will fit!

Cheers

John
