240 Engine swop
Engine Swap – Looking for advice /reassurance. I’ve acquired a 240 GLT Estate with a poor interior and body but excellent, low mileage mechanicals and I am considering transferring the engine and gearbox into my Torslanda. From a ‘nuts and bolts’ point of view the swap looks simple enough. Does anybody have any experience of what is required on the electrical front? I have noted Peter Milne’s advice from 21/10/01. “If both engines have the distributor to the rear of the camshaft you should have no problems. Similarly if both engines have the distributor mounted at the front left side of the crankcase no problem. It is when one does and the other don't that you will have problems.” The distributors are in the same position however the fuel injections systems are obviously different. Does anybody know if the ECU, relays etc... have all to be transferred as well?
Thanks and Regards Scott |

RE: 240 Engine swop
Funnily, I've been pondering this swap myself. I have a spare earlier engine, and I've been wondering how long I can expect my nearly 300,000 mile Torslanda engine to last.
My understanding is that all the bits like inlet manifold and the temp sensor etc are interchangeable between engines, so if you swap the basic engine but leave the periferals as it were, it should work using the present fuel and ignition systems. The Torslanda has nothing in the distributor but a rotor arm, and the ignition is activated via the crank sensor on the bell housing. So you could swap the distributor and crank sensor over too. I can't see how the ECU could then detect that it was a different engine, unless being of a different capacity would matter? The Torslanda is 2 litre, the GLT 2.3? I'll be interested to hear more views on this one. |

RE: 240 Engine swop
Hello Clifford. I didn't even consider swapping the fuel injection etc... around. As I have the complete donor car I was just going to swap everything over! That is why I was curious about the compatibility of the Torslanda electrics etc... to the 2.3 unit. It's certainly food for thought!
