Morning all.
I've got the chance to buy a 240 off a friend for what seems a very good price, he can't be bothered to clean it up and sell it on so I'm going to take it off his hands. What's the going rate for a pretty clean and tidy 100k miler? I can't remember the spec, it's a saloon in a dark blue. Ben. |

It depends on year, spec, bodywork, engine, condition if interior, estate or saloon etc. A dog of a GLT can be worth a few hundred quid whereas a mint DL can go for thousands. 240s have been on the rise over the last few years. Early saloons seem to be going for up to 40 at the moment. Estates seem to go for at least 900 even for low spec late ones. Get the model type, spec, age and condition. Put a few photos up and we will be able to help.

Lastly mileage doesn't have a huge impact with 240s and value. 100k is barely run in. These cars were but with an estimated operational life of 25 odd years. Only very low mileage seems to have a huge impact on price. These cars especially if early are often used as show vehicles and TBH can't really be hued into demanding daily use without developing some issues. Remember that although 270s are relatively cheap to buy quality parts cost. The best cars are those which have either been 30year old family servants or 'old giffer' saloons... Bought by some chap in 1982 when he retired and never wanted for anything until he croaks, or gives up driving. These cars tended to be bought by people who took care of them, probably smoked a pipe and didn't give a damn what the world thought about them. Time has killed most of the poorly maintained ones but they do rust, eventually. Get some pics and some history... Ie who owned it bought it etc and we will be sale to gives you a guesstimate on value.

Thanks for the reply!
I've only got a brief bit of information and a couple of pictures at the minute. It's a 1989 GL, the interior is very tidy indeed, I was surprised when I got in it! There's a piece of trim missing off one of the doors, there's a Volvo breakers up the A1 from me so I'll pop in and see if he has one. And a minor dint around the size of a £2 coin on the rear wing. ![]() ![]() Unfortunately my friend isn't the best at taking pictures haha. He wants £400 for it, but I was thinking it could fetch more than that if it had the little bits done? |

£400 is a good price! Probably among the least 'desirable' 240s, but who cares? It looks nice and smart, relatively low mileage, and looks like it's got years and years left in it yet. it'll probably need some minor mechanical love here and there, but they all do these days.

400 is a very good price. What's the mot? If you can't find the trim at the scrappy most trim is manufactured new either by Volvo or someone else. The great thing about 240s is that although they haven't been on the road for 20odd years, Volvo still supply many parts and those you can't buy from them you can usually find new if required. Looks like a very nice example. I'd be tempted myself. Although the headlight bowls are a bit yellow.. Replacement job I'm afraid.. Costs about 100 to get new headlights, they don't Polish out. It will make a huge difference to their effectiveness

Is it auto or manual? Do you know which engine it has?

As Wooble says, not the most desired model. But a seller only needs one buyer to desire the car. If I needed to replace my car, I would seriously consider that providing it is fundamentally as sound as it appears to be. I've mainly owned estates but I tend towards the look and feel of a saloon now. And well, that dark blue towards navy has class. Something similar seen in Edinburgh was recently feayured in the spotted thread. £400 must be a reasonable price for a very decent car, providing it is fundamentlaly sound.
Are you thinking of buying it to keep it? If it suits you, it should be a good car to buy. ![]() If you plan to do it up and sell it the arithmetic changes. You would need to deal in a highly desired model to have a prospect of not making a loss? And you are approaching the trader status with implications for increased liability to your buyer, and possibly tax ... and whatever. . Last edited by Stephen Edwin; Oct 1st, 2014 at 00:55. |
