Default Starter motor problem

Could someone help a non-techie like myself with this problem?

On the first push of my starter button nothing happens, just the cranky whirring of something spinning - it spins for about 4-5 seconds and then seems to slot into place. When I press the button again the engine starts as normal, but with the spinning noise for a few seconds.

Is this something that I need to get fixed quickly, or can I drive for a bit until I get time to look into it?

Thanks a lot

Tom

Not sure what system the starter uses, but it sounds like the pinion is sticking as it isn't being thrown into the flywheel ring gear, or disengaging properly afterwards. As long as you don't drive whilst it's engaged, it should be ok to use the car. However, the risk of not fixing it is that it might not engage at all, hence not being able to start it on the key....

Also just another quick question, what is the best way to rechrome, how much is it (we are talking about everything here) and what do you guys think is the best way to revamp the steering wheel? anyone have any wingmirrors spare and what kinda price am I looking at for a full body respray!

ps I have decided I am going down the modernising route, the car is not orignal in many aspects (wingmirrors, colour, seats, etc etc) so I do not feel too guilty in doing it to this car. I have just installed an amazing pioneer sound system with built in ipod attached just underneath the steering wheel, central locking has been installed and an alarm system as well.

I do some nice mirrors for the amazon they can be fitted to the wings or doors.
If you would like a sporty wheel it is possible to get a boss and fit a wheel of your choice.
Cost of a respray is a huge variable as normaly a significant amount of welding etc will be needed.
I'm all for moderising so keep it up.

Just coming back to the original question, I have had the problem looked at and the culprit was the solanoid which had broken its mounting and was virtually hanging off. So it will be checked, re-attached and the problem should be fixed.

Happy rolling.
