Single rear fog light?
Hey all,
I changed some bulbs on the rear today and noticed that on the passenger side, where the foglight is located at the bottom, the hole for bulb has a plastic blank over it. Are these supposed to have a rear fog either side? If I remove the blank and fit a fog bulb will it work or is the wiring just not there for it? There is a bulb on the drivers side. Can't say I've had to use my rear fogs at all so haven't noticed before. 2008 facelifted v50. Ta! |

I think the reason for a single fog lamp is so they are not mistaken for brake lights? I might be wrong but that's what i have been led to believe.

Or a cost cutting exercise.....
I may be attracting flak here, and may be in a minority of one, but it’s ok by me if my rear fogs are mistaken for brake lights, if it keeps a tailgater back. Also, would brake lights be constantly on? But see my sig.

https://www.powerbulbs.com/blog/2016...ear-fog-lights this kinda confirms what i thought though i do agree it would appear the break lights would be permanently on!

Having fog lights both sides makes it harder to see the brake lights even its very foggy, especially when both are close. .

Car only comes with 1 rear foglight, you can push out the blanking plate of the other light and put a bulb in but it won't be wired up.
I've got all my stuff ready to wire up the 2nd rear foglight but haven't got round to it yet.

I've got all the wire and stuff I just still can't work out how to push out the spade connectors into the terminals on the plug if that makes sense? I took it out a while ago and had a look but it seemed very stiff and I didn't want to break the working side.

Manufacturers have been doing it for years, it's a cost-cutting exercise. I remember having a VW Golf company car back in the early 90s that had the fog lamp lenses present in the light clusters both sides & even the reflector & bulb holder on the nearside but it just wasn't wired up from the factory. My C70's the same.

They only come with one because the regulations stipulate that only one is required - on the driver’s side. The chances of mistaking fog lights (on for a length of time) for brake lights (on for a comparatively short period of time, and there’s nearly always a third one on the middle) are slim. Yeah, sure, two fog lights “could” look like brakes with the middle light gone, but a single fog could look like brakes with both the middle and passenger side gone. Remember, some cars only come with one reversing light, and the reason isn’t that people could mistake them for front lights.
There’s no problem - legal or otherwise -with having two. Many Audis come with them on both sides as stock. I punched out the blank on the passenger side, stuck in a bulb, and wired it up to the existing light. I’m more visible in heavy fog which is to everyone’s benefit. |
