Default Petrol filler door won't open

Took my 855 T5 97 p reg for its MOT today, as is the way with such events the mechanic had to fail it on one thing only - the petrol filler door would not open and he could therefore not inspect the cap seal! The car had never done this before and so I got on the phone to my Volvo specialist who told me how to unclip the trim in the boot, pull the wire "grenade pin" and release the catch. Mechanic then passed the car as ok.

I have tried opening the door since then, it seems to be something to do with the central locking, if you press the central locking key fob and pull the locked filler door almost at the same time it will open. Sometimes it just stays locked fast. Almost random results.

Any ideas what the remedy to this is, Volvo specialist said that it may be indicative of a problem with the central locking motor, other Volvo dealer said it could be a problem with a 'solenoid'(?).

All doors and boot lock/unlock, lights flash, interior lights go off as normal when you press the key fob - just the filler door that is playing up.

If either of above is likely, is this something I can fix myself?

I not fixable by me any idea what this should cost to fix?

Thanks Karl,

Was that just for the part or for someone to do the job?

It was just for the part - fitting was next to nothing from what I can remember.

This happened on my '95 T5 Estate.

I used loads of WD40 which cleared the 'gunge' around the locking pin. Cleaned it up in situ and greased it. I've had no more problems. The lock tab on the hinged cover required some adjustment to ensure that the pin passed through easily - may have been knocked by a nozzle at some time.

I wish I'd known about the emergency release method in the rear light access panel - could have saved some blushes on the forecourt.

If it is the motor I believe a motor from a model car, scalextric or similar can easily be adapted to fit at a fraction of the cost of the volvo motor. There was a post a while ago about this, you could try a search.
