Had very similar at 3a.m. this morning when paying for fuel the young lad[I doubt he was old enough to have been born when my 960 was built]in the kiosk said "You don't see too many of those these days. They look a lot better than the modern stuff".

Basically what I am trying to do with mine a car I can use everyday not be too precious about and that makes me smile.

So if I want a 740 turbo it's one of these?

I agree on the displacement argument shame the V8 S80 isn't a V8 V80!

That's a 16V N/A, they have 155hp.

However it appears to have a ZF gearbox, the AW71 gearbox is bad enough at pulling away from a stand still but the ZF is on another level as rwdKev will agree. The electronic AW in your 960 is leagues ahead of the ZF gearbox.

If it is that rusty on top I dread to think what the underside is like.

If you want a turbo redblock your best bet will be a 1995 onwards M90 manual 940 and whack a manual boost controller on it.

Actually I've looked again and I think it is most likely an AW70 gearbox so not as bad as a ZF but still a power sapper.

Nope, that's a 740 GLT 16v with the n/asp, 16v 2.3 red block. Still pretty rare and it's too new to be a 740 Turbo. I believe it was 1988 the 740 Turbo was dropped and the 760 Turbo replaced it, this is a 740 Turbo :

I could be wrong on this but i think the 7xx PAS is heavier than the 9xx, to be honest it's one of the peeves i have with the 760, the steering is too heavy, especially at parking speeds. I can park my other beast with my little finger literally if i want to but i need to drag the wheel round on the 760 by comparison.

The S80 V8 is also pretty rare with the Yamaha V8 pumping out about 340bhp if memory serves. Makes it quite lively and perfect for upseting the Sauerkraut brigade. Debadge it and you have a true sleeper.

The 760 turbo came first, the 740 was offered as a cheaper alternative

It's difficult to pin down exactly Luke, there was i agree a 760 Turbo first (1984 i think) and then the 740 Turbo came along around 1986 for two years to be replaced by the 760 Turbo again. I didn't mention the earlier incarnation of the 760 Turbo as so few of them are likely to be around now.

However, other markets had other variations such as a 2.0 16v turbo for the turbo model (think that was Italy due to tax on larger engines) and the USA got other options as well and many Wikipeia pages are US generated. Either way the 740 Turbo in the UK is rare.

Agree with Luke re the manual boost controller. The 940 sports edition ( which are very rare ) had 190bhp and being 150kg lighter than the 960 and also being manual, it would leave it for dead

It is indeed an AW Luke, don't know if they've raised the stall speed on it to take advantage of the 16v engine, according to the Data Pocket the stall speed is 2450rpm so ~400rpm higher than the 8v engine.

Ok I surrender ... maybe I just need to go back to the twin turbo short 6 inline in the 960 driving the rear

Now all I need is the engine, gear box and someone who knows how to get it to work!

I think the need for swede speed is great in me
