Consumption Vs Cost
I see a lot of people comment, on various forums, that they get a better rate of consumption with ‘premium’ fuels but none of them ever comment on the additional price for that fuel. It’s something like 5p per litre, or more, for premium, so you’d have to have around a 20% increase in your mpg to make it worthwhile. That’s just not possible.

As it goes I just went to fill up as I was running on fumes and they only had the 95 Ron in. So I’ve put in £50 worth as an experiment and will report back my perceived findings!

At a time I was doing 25-30k a year mostly in my S80 I went Optimax (now V-power every time) or BP Ultimate. I would notice a difference in performance and MPG if I used cheap supermarket fuel, infact near the end of it's life the S80 had an unsolvable limp mode issue if you hit 2500rpm with any kind of gusto. What was relevant though was when running on Optimax it hardly happened. I never knew why. Tank of so called lesser quality fuel it would occur several times a journey.

I use mainly Tesco Momentum 99, or occasionally Sainsbury Super Unleaded 97.
I have also occasionally used Shell V-Power and to be honest I can't tell the difference. But because I have Polestar, it's recommended to only use Super Unleaded.

After two days of driving on the 95. Mixture of cruising and power moments. I can report that…
Car definitely feels less urgent when I drop the pedal. Still quick but less of the big head in the back of the seat surge. However. And this is going to sound pretty bonkers. The car feels smoother and sounds more relaxed with the 95 over the 99…! Is this the new fuel mix..? Or someone said re the car not working the fuel as hard with the lower ron, is that what’s made it sound less ‘rough’. Completely bizarre and not what I expected to report on. Any hypotheses welcome!
