Oil level check.... but READ button doesn’t work?
Hi. Have tried to get the oil level from dash.
I have PCC (keyless) so switch ignition on to II by holding down the start/stop without any pedals. Can then flick through the trip computer and see all MPG etc but cannot see engine oil. Engine is not on but my READ button on the stalk does not work. Is this needed for my to complete this exercise? Thanks all

Just tried it on mine, the car's new to me so there may be another way, I don't know.
Also a PCC car, it does the same with the key in the slot or out of the slot with the ignition on. I need to press the 'read' button, several times - the car's new to me and has a few issues at the minute so some of the presses are cycling through error messages I think before the electronic dipstick comes on. I looked at the physical dipstick and the levels match. |

Step 1: Insert the remote control into the ignition switch and give a long press on “START/STOP ENGINE” button. Cluster lights will turn on. Long = probably around 5 seconds. It does work. Step 2: Rotate the thumbwheel on the left-hand stalk switch until “Engine Oil level” is displayed in the cluster display. The Oil level graph should already be visible in your cluster screen. No need to use READ button at all, just scroll through the messages. |

There is one on mine 2010 E5 engine, but it’s a piddly little thing literally in the top of the sump. Not easy to reach. Evidently there is a police spec one that can be installed that turns it into a proper dipstick. This is something I will be installing in time.

From memory total cost was £65 ish.. There is a boss cast into the block which has an M7 thread in it to fix the tube bracket, if the thread is not there it will need drilling and tapping. At the time I did mine M7 was about the only tap I did not have so had to spend time flushing the hole with WD40 and gently winding the bolt in and out to clear corrosion from the hole. I would advise that a set of M7 taps and a ratchet tap wrench be obtained , or at least the bottoming tap to make clearing this hole a lot easier. Point of note, the full sized dipstick has not been recalibrated so full should equate to the 3/4 mark to avoid the engine service message too high an oil level will trigger. Hope that's helpful. Sadly it still doesn’t work. I’ve taken a video which I’ll attach.
Have tried without it with the key inserted (as I mentioned I do have PCC keyless) but sadly no joy! Anymore thoughts please people? Michael

You can't check the oil level via the dash on your car. If your car has a physical dipstick, then that's where you need to check it.
By the way, oil on the dipstick in the P3's like yours aren't filled to the full mark - They're filled around 3/4 of the way up (Any higher & you'll get a warning on the dash). So if the oil level is 3/4 up the dipstick already, don't add any more oil to the engine. If you do need to add some oil because its below the 3/4 mark, then make sure its only added to the 3/4 mark & not above! Early issues with these cars meant that Volvo had to recalibrate the dipsticks via recall. The issue was that as the DPF's tried to regenerate & failed, the oil level in the engine got higher & that triggered warning lights on the dash. So to compensate for rising oil levels due to failed DPF regenerations, Volvo recalibrated the dipsticks & the cars computer now thinks that 3/4 is full. This is why if you add too much oil over the 3/4 mark, you'll get an oil level high warning. Volvo garages are aware, or certainly should be aware of this if you bring your car to them to be serviced. If you take your car to be serviced at a non-Volvo garage, then don't be surprised if they put too much oil in (That's simply because they don't know about the dipstick recalibration that Volvo did several years ago & fill the engine to the full mark on the dipstick). So basically, don't fill your oil above the 3/4 mark on these cars & you won't have an issue.
