Default '95 850 electric sunroof problem

My electric sunroof won't open.

To cut a long story short, I removed the courtesy light cover then the motor and electrically, all is fine - when I press the open/close button, the motor spins happily.

The problem is obviously with the mechanism. Looking at my Haynes manual it states any sunroof works should be carried out by Volvo only due to its complex nature and the need to remove the headlining.

I'm a competent DIY mechanic so plan to investigate further myself, even if this means removing the headlining. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause or for gaining better access.

Thanks

I should have mentioned - it hasn't happened suddenly, its been like this since I bought the car 9 months ago.

To me, when I bought it showed signs of being idle for long periods outside - the roof & bonnet had green moss present and the plastic tray below the windscreen was full of leafs & twigs.

I'm thinking it may be seized?

I've got similar problem on my 99 V70, I believe there are plastic parts in the slides that can break and jam the mechanism but I'm waiting for a dry spell to try and remove the sunroof to have a look. Ayone know how to get at the slides when the roof is jammed in close position?
