I have noticed the back on my xc70 has been starting to drift a little on roundabouts. It feels like it's happening more and more and can feel it a little on regular turns.

The tyres probably do need changing due to slight hairline cracks whivh are related to age etc, but tread seems ok. I will measure the tread later to be sure.

Would there be any other factors in the back end drifting so much?

If tyres are cracking, you probably want to get them changed, even if the tread is good... they're perished. Cracks are just a sign of a blow-out waiting to happen.

Tyres would be my first port of call, but rear shocks could also be a culprit to what you're experiencing. Rear trailing arms are also another culprit.

On a AWD car, if you over power on a corner it will oversteer (put the back out) as a rear wheel drive car would.

As said check tyre pressures and condition.

When I had a leak in one of my Nivomats it sometimes hopped on corners.

Check the manufacture date on the side of the tire if its started to crack on the side walls its very possible the tread surface is also hard as kev said worn trailing arm bushes are a possible bear in mind its 3 point on your licence i for each faulty tire if you are involved in an accident if the police attend and inspect your car...

If your tyres are cracking they have lost their pliancy and gone hard. They will have lost significant grip. Sort them first, it's likely to sort your issues. If they're still there afterwards, then rear suspension bushes and alignment are the next steps.

Rear trailing arm bushes were done around 6 months ago.

I think we are looking at tyres. They are probably around 5 years old because I got them fitted just after buying the car

Buy premium tyres not cheap ones you will soon realise you get what you pay for with plenty of grip and a much smoother ride.
Back when the 343 was Very popular ( 9th best selling car in UK in the 80's ) some customers would complain of the rear end sliding on roundabouts. Every single time Premium tyres were advised and they transformed the car. The 300 series has perfect 50-50 weight distribution. It is almost impossible to loose grip even in the wet with decent tyres.

Just on the subject of tyres, why is the information so inconsistent between fitting companies. Looked at the same tyre (Goodyear Eagle asymmetric 5) and all sites are giving different fuel economy and wet weather ratings..

Is there a trusted, recognised tyre review site you could reccomend?
