Default Mirror surprise

So on a rainy night in Doncaster some eejit in a white van clipped my S90's driver's door mirror. The result was one cracked glass, and one tiny but vital broken actuator arm in the motor assembly.

Now the mirror is 23 years old, from a car that was never made in great numbers, and so I was resigned to an expensive fix and possibly a long wait for parts. Cracked mirror duly bodged with a tasteful selection of cable ties.

But hey, good old Ebay! I searched for Volvo S90 mirrors - and the first result was a brand new motor, the second a new glass - complete with heating element. Grand total for a next-day delivery? Just £23, delivered next day by first class post.

Neither part is genuine Volvo, but both fit and work perfectly. As it turns out both parts are common to most Volvos of the period.

And as a testament to the quality of the original, despite being whacked at what must have been a closing speed of 50mph or more, there isn't even the slightest mark in the paintwork of the mirror shell.

Excellent result. It’s nice when something works out well.
