Default choke and clutch

I have a 1983 340 GL and have a couple of small problems: On startup, there is a rattling noise which disappears when the clutch is pushed in and returns if allowed to idle with the clutch released again.
secondly, the car won't idle at high revs if the choke is pulled fully out from cold. It is better but not great when the choke is pushed half in or more. Doesn't want to tickover smoothly until engine is warm.

Any ideas please?!

Gavin,
The rattle you describe is proably slack in the splined couplings on the drive shaft between the engine and gearbox. As you are probably aware, on these cars the engine is at the front but the gearbox is bolted to the rear axle hence the separate shaft between them.
these splines can fail causing a total lack of drive but they often rattle slightly without giving trouble ( mine did for 5 years !)
It sounds as if the choke linkage is not opening the throttle when the choke is operated and requires repair or adjustment.
Colin.

yeah, or the throttle plates are gummed up and dirty and therefore not allowing the correct amount of mix in and someone has just ground up the idling speed to correct the warm running.

Get some carb cleaner and follow the directions then readjust the idle if necessary. Then you can check the throttle stop adjustment on the choke cam if necessary, easy to do, follow directions in Haynes.
