Temp guage faulty?
Evening all
I've just added a '95 940 D24TIC to the fleet and I have to say, what a beast!! A little tatty, but it's the new work-bus so I'm not really bothered. Considering how long the D24's been around, it's a belter, nice smooth power delivery, bags of torque, smooth idling (my old 2.8 diesel Shogun used to rattle my fillings loose at idle!) A little more power would be nice, but that can be cured with a little more fuel and boost But above all... What a noise!! Anyway... The problem in hand: My temperature guage doesn't work, straight from cold it reads half way and doesn't move. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers in advance, Steve

Hi, Sounds like sender unit rather than thermostat.

Hi,
Thanks for that. If I manage to find the sender, if I unplug it, should the needle read zero? Thus diagnosing the problem? Thanks, Steve

Thanks guys.
Oilydad: the link you gave me only seems to cover the petrol models, that's the trouble with the D24 I suppose, it's a bit of a rare beast. Haynes don't even cover it Oh well, I'm sure I'll be able to find it, very few sensors on this engine so I'm sure it'll be easy enough. I'll give it a whirl and see what happens. Thanks, Steve

Sorry about the link. Thought the diesel was there as well!
Best I can suggest is a trawl through the 'search' facility here on the forum putting D24 into the box. There IS a Green Book (D24, D24T and D24TIC) Part Number V97000164, but whether Volvo still do it I don't know. I did see that someone had one for sale a while ago, and had had no response.... (in the D24 search results). So he just might still have it? I've had a quick look through the Brickboard site, as well as here, but haven't been able to locate the location of the sensor for you. I'm sure somebody will be able to help you.

Not to worry.
I'm sure I'll mange to find it. That's the joy of an old-skool diesel like this, there's only about 3 sensors on the whole thing! Can only think of; Glow plug temp, coolant temp sender and overboost light!! Not much of a process of elimination! Thanks, Steve

Hi,
3 possibilities for this. 1) The sender and associated wiring to the dash. 2) The Gauge itself. 3) The plastic circuit board. Senders will die in time. The gauges fail regularly. The circuit board is a known source of many dash and gauge faults. I would test the sender and then the gauge to make sure they are working correctly knowing there is a likely fault with the circuit board. Des. . .

Hi,
You have to love the D24s! I think I'm correct in saying that you'll find the temp gauge sender at the very back of the head, just underneath the injection pump drive belt. Nasty, fiddly job to change as you can't see it and have to do the job while stretched across the engine bay! First check the cable is connected properly. All the D24s I've seen use a standard spade terminal that slide onto a disc fitted to the top of the sender. Not particularly durable! My gauge would be very erratic, until 'fixed' with a well placed thump to the top of the dash. I think there is a problem with a dry joint on the back of the instrument cluster. Have a look at the FAQs. I swapped a couple of D24 recently and know of 3 temp sensors, have to be honest.....I'm not sure what they all do! 1 - Temp gauge on back of head 2 - sender mounted at front of block under alternator mounting casting. 3 - some sort of sensor (not connected on mine) on the coolant drain housing (on the injection pump side of the block) If anyone else, can add to or correct this...please do. Cheers, Rich |
