Volvo 960 / M90 manual transmission gear lever bushings
Dear All,
If you look at the attached pictures, I noticed some lateral play between the gear selector and the gear lever, I suspect worn bushings. I believe those bushings are Volvo P/N 1209638 (as per attached picture), may anyone confirm? Also, I do not see a way to unscrew the pin connecting the gear selector and the gear lever, where those bushings are installed. Does anyone know the procedure for changing those? Many thanks for your help, Antoine |

Hi Antoine,
Not sure about the part number as I purchased brass replacements from IPD in the States. Looking at your first picture, to remove the bushes you need to loosen the grub screw with the hex hole (with an allen/hex key). This allows you to remove the small round bar that goes through the gear selector/bottom of gear lever and remove the bushes. It's one of those jobs that would be very simple if only you could get to the bits you need to! Tim |

Hi Tim,
Many thanks for your guidance, I thought about this Allen key, but was not sure. Should be an easy job. I believe the P/N is the right one, looking at this M90 schematic. According to your experience, would there be other bushes worth changing during this operation? Regards, Antoine |

I replaced the same bushes as you and it didn't make a massive difference. I'm wondering if bush no 15 would help as well

Hi also ordered bushing no 15, which seems a bit trickier to change. I will (try) to change it together with bushing no 18, I will let you know the result after Christmas, as my car is stored in the countryside, so I can only work on it during holidays.

I also thought 31,32 and 38 would possibly stiffen things up a bit

Improvement
I just replaced bushings 18 and 19 and it was some improvement. Then I realized I forgot O-ring 20. Some time later when I replaced the rear seal of the M90 I put in an O-ring and it made a massive improvement! The gear lever feels much more precise. I even have the feeling that it improved the heavy engaging of gears I sometimes had.
Quite an easy job, but it might be a bit difficult to reach as it is located fairly high up underneath the car. With the front wheels on ramps it is no problem at all. Rob |

I checked on the Skandix website, only No 32 is available (Euro 33). But it is difficult to guess if this is an easy replacement.

Good news that you obtained some improvement! When ordering No 18 at Skandix, No 20 is provided (it is a kit), so the last one will also be replaced. I will proceed with front wheels on ramps, so hopefully it will not be too difficult. Did you mean you replaced 18 & 15, as no 19 is a bracket? In this case, is 15 an easy replacement?
Thanks, Antoine |

The o-ring #20 was missing on mine. The parts guy said spindle #14 can wear as well, so I replaced that at the same time. Together with new bushings it was perhaps a little bit tighter but not a big difference.
An o-ring is still a bit squashy, could a plastic nylon washer be used instead to tighten things up?
